O your sugared stickiness
gleams from within the
display glass as if inside
an incubator
fast asleep from the perils
of mixers and deep-fryers
and the hands that
formed you
sculpted by a
smooth sheen of sweet
and lovingly laid
on paper
so the dough remains
porously tender
and warm, springy
and lush
How I imagine
the first nibble,
my teeth grazing
into that syrupy halo —
Of all the others
who call my attention
with stripes and sprinkles
that wink and perch
on beds of chocolate
I choose you,
O lustrous one,
for your golden glint,
your promise of simple
satisfaction
